Question: Do I need a physician referral to start treatment?
Answer: No, Maryland is a direct access state by law, meaning that you can go directly to physical therapy without a physician's referral for any musculoskeletal injury. Physical therapists are the musculoskeletal experts and can save you time and money by avoiding expensive testing such as an MRI and prolonged wait times that only delay your recovery and put outcomes at risk.

Question: What is a direct care provider?
Answer: Pioneer PT is a direct care provider, which means that payment in the form of cash, check, or credit is due at the time of treatment. Pioneer PT does not participate or have a contract with any insurance company. This is done to keep the cost down, and to provide the best care possible for our clients.

Question: Do you accept my insurance?
Answer: Pioneer PT is not contracted with insurance companies so that we are able to give hands on, one-on-one care for a full hour with clients to accelerate recovery and function. Quality over quantity allows you to get better faster. Traditionally clinicians see 2-4 clients per hour and your time spent with the actual PT is limited due to insurance companies reimbursing approximately half of what is billed. This reduced rate is accepted by contract in the traditional insurance based setting. We do not believe in compromising care at the cost of the client.

Question: Am I able to get reimbursement from my insurance company?
Answer: Yes, this is possible, however the client is responsible for submitting a claims form to their insurance company. This can be found on the insurance company's website. If your insurance allows out-of-network benefits we will provide a proper receipt, upon request, that must be sent in with your claims form. It is advised that you call your insurance company to ask about out-of-network care and reimbursement if you are unsure. Proper questions to ask include: Do I have out-of-network benefits? Do I have a deductible for these benefits and if so how close am I to meeting my deductible? Can you please help to provide me with the proper paperwork to submit an out-of-network claim? Does my insurance require pre-authorization prior to physical therapy treatments in order to receive reimbursement? The phone number for your plan can be found on the back of your insurance card. Wellness visits are non-reimbursable.

Question: How often can I expect to be seen?
Answer: Treatment plans are individualized to each client based on the initial evaluation findings and compliance with recommended home program. Generally, clients are seen 1-2 x/ week depending on the complexity of their diagnosis and their goals. Frequency of visits per week is greatest initially, but reduces over the course of care and is spread out over time. The course of treatment could be as little as a couple visits up to a couple months, again depending on severity of diagnosis and ultimate goal of the client. For example, it may take someone longer to return to sport than to walk two blocks. Our goal is to get you back to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible. We do understand that your time is valuable and promise not to waste your time with activities that can be done independently.
